As part of a broader organisational restructure, data networking research at Swinburne University of Technology has moved from the Centre for Advanced Internet Architecture (CAIA) to the Internet For Things (I4T) Research Lab.

Although CAIA no longer exists, this website reflects CAIA's activities and outputs between March 2002 and February 2017, and is being maintained as a service to the broader data networking research community.

BART (Broadband Access Research Testbed)

Introduction - The BART Testbed Overview

One of the three research areas at CAIA is the development of next generation broadband IP access architectures. The primary goal of the BART testbed is to provide a platform whereby new network applications and protocols can be evaluated in a realistic home-user broadband access scenario. Within the testbed we can simulate a variety of virtual ISP scenarios upon which experiments can be run.

The BART testbed is applied to all aspects of research undertaken at CAIA, including:

  • ICE3 - To evaluate the current Internet user experience and trial traffic measurement techniques in the home Internet scenario. This will allow for a more detailed comparison against the network model proposed by ICE3
  • GENIUS - To evaluate the performance of current broadband home Internet architecture in supporting the latest multiplayer networked games
  • LIFE - To experiment with different lawful interception techniques that can be deployed at the ISP in order to legally comply with the requirements of Law Enforcement Agencies
  • MAGIC - To empirically determine both the performance and viability of mobile access technologies when deployed in a home Internet scenario
  • IP/Link Layer Protocols - To empirically measure the performance of new IP and Link Layer Protocols in a broadband access environment
  • Billing Techniques - To develop and test new billing models that more accurately reflect the consumer experience, and methods for deploying and managing differentiated service qualities over shared links

Equipment

The BART testbed consists of a number of DOCSIS-based cable modems on a single co-axial cable, a number of ADSL modems connected to a single DSLAM, and 802.11 access networks. For more details including a network diagram please see here.

Capabilities

For further information of what we can do with the BART testbed, please see here.

If you wish to utilise the BART testbed for your research, please see here.

Support

The BART testbed would not exist without the valued support of Cisco Systems (Australia/New Zealand).
